Homba Den

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy ...We must be cautious..."

History

It was back during the Coronation of TRM's Treve Morningstar and Carmanetta Rosia Diez de Rodriguez that the originators of the Den first considered creating a household.  They had glowed in the pleasure of companionship and revelry, and then looked upon the faces of some of their dearest friends, and seen something dirturbing:  the scars wrought by the unneccesary conflict and political fewmets that crop up over the years in any gathering of two or more people had taken their toll, and taken their smiles.

It is a fact that every two years or so, the culture of the SCA cycles through peaks and valleys, where the joyous and the jaded shift back and forth.  This is natural, like waves on an ocean, but when a trough dips, the center cannot hold, and the Dream cries.  Homba Den was started to try to encourage the joy, and the silliness, and the "game" of this adventure we all play.

Over time, we too have evolved, and had our peaks and valleys.  For a group that swears "we're not responsible!" we have had a number of our household become either local officers or local "characters".  Also, every member has had mundane life bite them where it hurts, on occasion, and taken a sabbatical to get back to themselves.  Over the past several years we have scattered far and wide, geographically, and some of us have taken an extended leave from our little "family" to focus on mundane lives, and on other, personal quests.  What manages to still bind us together cannot be quantified, or easily explained.  It is a feeling that extends past the "Denizens" themselves to those friends and family we call our own, and it stands regardless of distance and time, secure in our memories and in the understanding there will always be more memories to be made.

One thing that stands as a symbol of this feeling, is the creed we try to live by, embodied in the Litany of the Rings:

The Litany of the Rings

Seven there are, and shall always be,
That form the Chain of Honor,
Each a ring of perfect gold, -- separate, and complete.
When locked in union, their strength indomitable,
Yet each as vulnerable as the least...

Courage

To face the greatest foe, even if it be oneself...

Humility

Pride is thy shadow -- sometimes unseen, always there,
at times exaggerated, but always made of air...

Charity

Give all of oneself, that ye may receive...

Honesty

above all -- When a man lies,
he murders some part of the World...

Diligence

Never give up the Quest -- If one never quits, one never fails...

Purity

of the mind and spirit, which brings purity of the soul...

Fidelity

to thy Lord, thy mate, thy Word and thy self...

Random Bit of Den Lore or Memory

(also subject to periodic change without notice)

(This is the song from the 1981* movie "Knightriders":)

Sitting here alone in my father's home
Tomorrow I'll be leaving, and I'll be on my own
Through the hills as a child I'll go
But I'd rather be a wanderer, than to never go alone
In my soul a song lies sleeping
Waiting to be born, I hear her weeping
Deep inside I can feel her dance
Calling run to me lover, touch my heart's innocence
I see that life is an old thin road
There'll be people who stay, there'll be people who go
You know at first it pains me so
I think I'm just learning how...to let go
Pity there's just emptiness, but with sorrow there comes joy
And I would rather die in a hurricane, than to never know a storm
Fears I've known, I've faced them
As my castle walls fall
Oh, but I would let those castles fall
Or I'd never love at all...
