Society for Creative Anachronism

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international organization dedicated to researching and recreating pre-17th-century European history.  It is also a wonderful group of people who restored my faith in humanity's ability to quest beyond the mediocre to create something remarkable.  It is a group made up of extremely divergent personalities, many of whom I would label "noble rogues," and many of whom I would actually trust with my life (which is no small thing for me, I assure you).  If I were to try to describe the Society fully here, it would probably crash the server, so instead I will offer a brief persona sketch and a selection of links for those who wish to explore further.

Persona Sketch

In the SCA, I go by the name of Caitlin nicCailltigern oConair (which name will hopefully be officially passed by the College of Heralds in a year or so ).  Caitlin's story begins with her mother's story; as was not uncommon in those days Caitlin's mother, Cailltigern, a young Irish woman from reasonably well-to-do family, was to be given by her parents in marriage to a rich old man in order to increase her fortune.  She was less than thrilled with the prospect of marrying the dotard old carle, and ran off instead, indenturing herself to a Welsh merchant passing through.  She had learned enough letters to be able to manage the household finances in the event of a future husband's call to arms, so she traded inexpensive clerking skill for room and board.  The Welsh merchant was on the road often, and had a talent for keeping his bed warm wherever he went.  After some months, Caitlin was born.  Her name, translated, means "Caitlin, daughter of Cailltigern, of the wayside", as she came along the way.  Her father's only overt nod to his connection in her creation was his willingness to keep her on to attend the business affairs after her mother passed away from illness during Caitlin's teens.

Caitlin travelled with her father and a small horde of brothers throughout the northern lands, as far east as Scandinavia, as far west as the (later to become) British Isles, and occasionally as far south as Constantinople.  When her father died, purportedly in a conflict resulting from a disagreement with some locals on the road (in reality in a conflict with a gentleman who found his wife in too familiar circumstances with the old rogue), her brothers took over hawking the wares, and mobilizing the camp, while she continued to work the books.  She will sometimes be found wearing Norse fashions, as she has found them of wonderful design for utility, though her passion for knotwork has begun to slowly creep into her more formal wear.

She is comfortable with the travelling life, and has a particular fondness for bardic fires.  She sings a little, finds fascination in various languages and has gained the nickname "Fireflyte" through personality traits she denies emphatically.
